Privacy-Protection software

The following software has been recommended (mostly by the software's vendor) as a possible remedy to or protection against Carnivore/DCS1000's invasive tactics. The quality, safety, and reliability of these tools have not been tested fully by StopCarnivore.org, and we make no claims or warranties as to their effectiveness. Please contact the vendor or listed contact person for more information about any of the listed products or services.

  • Free online encryption tool: CenturionSoft has developed an online service which will encrypt (encode) and/or decrypt (decode) a message for e-mailing. It will also send encrypted messages. The system is available for free use at their web site. (Contact: Michael Held)
  • Carnivore/DCS1000 ChainMail, Inc. has responded to the intrusiveness of Carnivore/DCS1000 with "Antivore," a.k.a Mithril Secure Server. Mithril is software for ISPs to install on their network, which provides encryption for all the users of that network, on the server side of things. This is not software for users, but is something you can encourage your ISP to install in order to thwart Carnivore. Chainmail, Inc has released a free, open-source version of Antivore, available for download here.
  • Carnivore/DCS1000 ZeroKnowledge, Inc. is offering their Freedom® software as a safeguard against the prying of Carnivore/DCS1000, or any other potential privacy violations. This software seems to be a very robust and thorough privacy system- it uses "multiple layers" of encryption, and routes your data through the "Freedom Network," a series of "privacy-enhancing detours." You can learn more about Freedom, and purchase it if you wish, here. The software costs $49.95. (note: StopCarnivore.org receives $5 for each copy of Freedom purchased through these links . All funds earned will be used to support the StopCarnivore.org campaign. To find out what the money will be spent on, e-mail us.)
  • Free e-mail privacy protection service: PrivateMailPlus looks like a really interesting service. I haven't tried it out yet, but it claims to work with all the different e-mail systems, and allows you to password-protect your e-mails, without a download or plug-in. I'd say it's worth taking a look at. Click here to check it out.
  • More web-based encryption: Hushmail and MailVault offer web-based encryption services, which may be more convenient for those who use a computer at their school or library. (Thanks to Thomas L. Knapp from Free-Market.net for these.)
  • Open-Source Carnivore/DCS1000 Alternative: NetworkICE has developed an open-source software tool that they think will do everything the FBI is using Carnivore/DCS1000 for. This would help ISPs satisfy warrants without having Carnivore installed. ISPs, take a look: Altivore.
  • Another free encryption tool: PrivacyX is another system which offers encrypted e-mail. I haven't tried it out, but it looks interesting and worthwhile. Their entire site is on a secure server, which certainly shows a certain respect for privacy!
  • E-mail Security for Businesses: InterosaMail is software for businesses. I'll quote their description: "InterosaMail is a scalable, secure, easy-to-support complement to your email infrastructure, protecting the confidentiality of business communication while preserving the performance of your mail server." I haven't tried it, but it looks fine to me, and there's a free trial download so you can see how it works.
  • PC Security Suite: Centurionsoft, who offer the free encrypted e-mail tool at the top of this list, also sell Steganos Security Suite, which seems to be a full-function privacy toolkit for your PC. They offer a 30-day free trial.

For now, that's the list. Of course, there are lots of different software solutions to help you protect your privacy- you can check out a search for "privacy" on Download.com. And we didn't even list PGP- one of the most famous and common privacy tools out there.

We'll post more privacy solutions soon, or as we are told about them. If you have a favorite privacy tool, or if you develop or vend privacy solutions, contact us and we will post your product or tool here!
